So, we are still buying those gold rush apples from the farmers' market; they seem to be one of the few that are staying crisp. And we put together this little lunch salad of watercress (hydroponic from Shushan farms, a gift from the sellers), spinach, lettuce, peanuts (Hubs, of course, because I just can't resist), a little thinly cut scallion, and a lot of julienned gold rush apples. I am trying to reel myself in from giantic salads and this one is filling so it is easy to feel satisfied after a small serving.
So, some say the farmer's market has been circulating the same unsold apples, but truly as they are out of season, it has to work this way, and they are cold-stored not really spending their days going market to market. I mean, I would rather have a local organic (if possible) apple that was stored locally and not waxed or coated than a shipped apple that has been treated for travel and does not pack a punch of flavor...also, certain fall varieties are meant to last and be stored. So, I am trusting that I am getting fresh apples (maybe not picked yesterday) but not months old. The markets also still have plenty of other long lasting crops including potatoes, onions, garlic, turnips, parsnips, carnival, acorn and butternut squash are hearty and can be stored quite a while. So, while these are sometimes stored by the farmer before they are brought to market, they tend to be significantly fresher than grocery store brands. And, you can buy and store them for future. Also, while greens are dwindling, there are some grown in tunnels and hydroponically so the selections is not that bad. Some of the thicker greens like kale and heavier mustard greens also tend to last...
