Short Summer Days

The sun is setting earlier and our lazy days are coming to an end. The last soccer session and the playground swin carnival were not the last of the last's but we are getting there with camp officially over but for a few ceremonious affairs.
Not to worry, our vegetables are still going strong into the heart of the harvest season. The end of the summer brought tiger melons just picked from our CSA (the Sizer Homestead), cute and small they taste like cantaloupe but not as sweet. The kids had fun eating the little melons and the Sizers suggested filling them with dessert (ice cream or yogurt) but actually I think they were great on their own.
I am now inundated with more squash but, do not fret, I will use it. For the last of last week's squash last, revising a recipe suggestion from a good friend, I put together squash, onions and cabbage sauteed gently with whole cumin seeds and a touch of sea salt. It was pretty delicious and very easy.
Tonight's squash will go into a caper tomato sauce, a vat of vegetable chilli, some more country style tomato soup and I may have to freeze some steamed chunks to work with throughout the year as a moist ingredient in baking.
We also hit the lottery with some really sweet corn, but, alas, I have too much. We have gone through about six ears which I think leaves me with about twenty more. Our full share has been wonderful but at moments can be a little much. Does anyone local need some ears? The corn was grown right on route 2 south of Annapolis. And, it is tasty. We head north on Sunday...
